It's quite a lot more CPU friendly (albeit that's less important for some, such as me now.) Hive has some customization in what base sound of the engine you have (clean, normal, dirty), it's got my personal favorite set of Chorus options (classic is good, but dramatic and ensemble both have really solid distinct sounds).

That being said, before I seriously upgraded my computer, getting the kind of full sound I wanted out of Serum or Pigments would use the majority of my CPU for just 1 track - and Hive would fluctuate between 2~5% usage. It's definitely not a bad option, and does have a lot of cross-over with many other products. Aside from the regular basic effects, Serum's Hyper/dimension is notable, and probably better in that kind of micro-delay than any other VST I can think of - I'm by no means trying to bring down Serum.Īnd I quite liked Pigments, the granular engine is very cool and I can't think of another synth that does both regular synth sounds and granular so well, too.

Serum has the obvious perk of importable wave-tables, and (if presets are your thing) probably the most available free and paid presets out of any synth I can think of, due to it's popularity and age. If you're looking for a more specific sound, some of their other programs may be better (like Diva, or Zebra) but Hive is a great starting point if you don't have any of the "big boys" imo I still think Serum/Massive X can do some funkier wave table stuff, and Sylenth has a bit nicer pure analog tone, but even then, I often layer those with Hive for a fuller sound. It sounds phenomenal, has quite a bit of customization, and it runs low CPU compared to many of it's counterparts, too. Of all the synths I have, it's the only one where I actually use presets because there's so many, they're well-tailored, and the library for finding the kind of sound you want beats any other synth preset library I've ever seen (even if you just want to load a preset for a starting point).

I own several other similar synths and have used (rent-to-own) the major ones I don't own, Hive is one of the reasons I didn't bother finishing the rent-to-own and a go-to favorite I picked up in NI's sale.
